Edmonton Indy off schedule due to venue flap

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—The IndyCar Series stop in Edmonton, Alberta, is off the schedule after the city and event promoter were unable to agree on a location for the race.
The event had been held the past three years on a temporary City Centre Airport circuit.
Montreal-based Octane took over the race from race organizer Northlands in July. The Edmonton Indy lost $9 million over its first two races in 2008 and 2009.
Octane said in statement Wednesday that it will look at relocating the 2011 event to another city. IndyCar officials said in a separate statement that they are examining options to replace the event on next season’s calendar.
Toronto is the only other Canadian stop on the Indy Racing League’s schedule.

Rusty Wallace signs dental company as sponsor

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP)—Rusty Wallace has landed a new sponsor for Nationwide driver Brendan Gaughan for the final race of the season at Homestead.
The agreement is with Aspen Dental of Syracuse for Gaughan’s No. 62 Toyota.
Aspen Dental marketing director Mike Petrosillo says the company looked at a lot of race teams before deciding on Wallace. The company hopes to extend the sponsorship through next year with a goal of reaching the Cup level if and when Wallace makes the jump.
Half of Gaughan’s races are sponsored by a casino and the other half by various outfits.
Aspen Dental has 255 dental practices in 21 states.

NASCAR’s McDowell docked 50 points for violations

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP)—NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Michael McDowell has been docked 50 points and the crew chief for the No. 46 Chevrolet was suspended indefinitely after weight pellets were found in the car’s frame at Talladega.
NASCAR said Thursday the violations were uncovered during an inspection two days before McDowell finished 35th in Sunday’s race. The penalty leaves him 44th in the standings with 879 points.
Crew chief Thomas Tucker was fined $50,000, and two others also were suspended indefinitely. Car owner Dusty Whitney was penalized 50 points in the owner standings.
The No. 46 team was cited for actions detrimental to stock car racing, along with equipment and weight violations.

NASCAR remembers Jim Hunter at Darlington service

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP)—Before a lineup of stock-car greats past and present, Jim Hunter was remembered Wednesday as friend and father, communicator and counselor by the racing family he loved.
“He was the face of NASCAR and, in many ways, NASCAR was his face,” NASCAR President Mike Helton said.
The hourlong memorial service at Darlington Presbyterian Church honored the man who spent about half a century connected to NASCAR as promoter, journalist, author and executive. Hunter died at 71 last Friday after a yearlong fight with cancer.
